New York's Up-to-Birth Law Not Popular

When New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law legislation legalizing abortions up to birth in New York state, pro-life organizations called that a radical law out of step with the views of most Americans on abortion. According to a new poll conducted by Marist University, those pro-life groups were right. That’s because just 13 percent of Americans and 21 percent of New York residents support that New York law allowing abortions for any reason without any limits up to the day a baby is born. Left Trying to Put Abortion in the Constitution

A trio of female leaders representing grassroots organizations with a national presence spearheaded a Capitol Hill briefing on the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) earlier this month to illustrate, once more, that the abortion agenda has hijacked the women’s movement, to the detriment of what women truly want and need. Facing a renewed push for passage of the ERA, Eagle Forum and Students for Life of America (SFL) sponsored a briefing for legislators and their staff because, although the legal deadline has long passed and proponents of the ERA failed to win the hearts and minds of Americans, the abortion lobby is in full swing trying to create a constitutional foothold for abortion within the ERA. Judge Strikes Down NC 20-Weeks Law

A federal judge has struck down North Carolina's long-standing ban on abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, ruling that such an arbitrary timeline could deprive a woman of her constitutional right to end a pregnancy before her fetus could viably live on its own outside the womb. U.S. District Judge William Osteen Jr. immediately stayed his ruling for 60 days to give state lawmakers a chance to appeal his ruling or pass new legislation regarding abortions. Read more...

Utah Governor Signs 18-Weeks Law

Gov. Gary Herbert signed into law a bill to ban abortions in Utah after 18 weeks. Utah previously allowed abortions up to 22 weeks gestation, but many Utah doctors drew the line at 21 weeks to avoid risk of violating the law. HB136, sponsored by Rep. Cheryl Acton, R-Salt Lake City, originally set the limit for legal abortions at 15 weeks gestation, but the bill was revised in the House. Support for the bill came despite the likelihood it will be challenged in court. Read more...

Wen Says: 'No Such Thing as Infanticide'

Planned Parenthood's new president lashed out this week against Republicans' efforts to protect babies born alive after botched abortions from infanticide. In a letter, Leana Wen claimed that pro-life lawmakers are misleading the American people, and there is "no such thing as infanticide in medical care." "These claims by politicians about abortion later in pregnancy are false. That is simply not how abortion care or pregnancy care works," Wen wrote. "There is no such thing as infanticide in medical care—I can tell you, as a doctor, that it doesn't happen and it is already illegal." Read More

Puerto Rico Governor Vetoes Pro-Life

Although the pro-life bill passed both houses of the commonwealth legislature with overwhelming majorities, Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rosselló has vowed to veto it. The bill, entitled the “Law for the Protection of Women and the Preservation of Life” (PS 950), would have introduced a number of common-sense restrictions on abortion in the U.S. commonwealth, including requiring parental consent for minors under 18 years of age seeking abortion and requiring that infants born alive after an abortion are provided with appropriate medical care. Gov. Kristi Noem signed several pro-life bills into law. Noem said in a statement that the bills will "crack down" on abortion providers in South Dakota by requiring the facilities to provide women with "specific, scientific information" about the fetus. "A strong and growing body of medical research provides evidence that unborn babies can feel, think and recognize sounds in the womb," Noem said. "These are people, and they must be given the same basic dignities as anyone else." The new laws will go into effect July 1. Read More

Pro-Lifers Attack New Huntsville Rule

Two pro-life advocates have filed a lawsuit against the city of Huntsville claiming a violation of their rights to free speech. Hannah Ford, from Personhood Alabama, said James and Carol Henderson have stood outside Alabama Women’s Center for Reproductive Alternatives for years to “legally advocated for life.” The couple applies for a special events permit every six months so that they may “sidewalk counsel” women seeking abortions outside the clinic, the lawsuit states. In 2017 new language was added to the permit restricting the volume levels the couple were allowed to engage in. Read More
