House Democrats, led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, introduced a bill to block the Trump administration’s new “Protect Life” rule, which would strip away taxpayer funding from Planned Parenthood. The measure is part of a larger spending bill for the Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS), Labor and Education. It appears unlikely to pass the Republican-controlled U.S. Senate. U.S. Rep. Georgia governor Brian Kemp signed into law a “heartbeat bill,” which prohibits abortion after a fetal heartbeat can be detected, usually about six weeks into pregnancy. The state legislature passed the bill in late March and it has been awaiting Kemp’s signature, though he assured Republicans and pro-life activists in his state that he intended to approve the measure. After Georgia’s legislature passed the bill, the ACLU announced its intention to sue the state government should Kemp sign the bill, and a number of celebrities, including actress and progressive activist Alyssa Milano, have threatened to boycott the state over the legislation. Pro-life lawmakers in Alabama lit a national firestorm this week by approving a near-total ban on abortion and imposing harsh penalties on doctors who perform the procedure. But supporters of the legislation do not expect it to take effect without a fight -- and that's by design. The bill, known as HB314, criminalizes abortion in nearly every scenario, without any exceptions for cases of rape or incest, regardless of how far along a woman's pregnancy is. Over the weekend, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp mocked "C-list celebrities" over their threats to boycott the state for signing a so-called "heartbeat bill" into law. The pro-life legislation protects the unborn from abortion when they have a detectable heartbeat, which is around six weeks gestation. Kemp, a Republican, was faced with threats from Hollywood players, such as abortion activist Alyssa Milano, that they would no longer work in GA if he were to sign the bill. Lawmakers in Illinois have advanced what could be the nation's most liberal abortion law. Supporters say the measure is necessary to counter other states' actions to restrict abortion and the threat to overturn Roe v. Wade – the Supreme Court ruling that created abortion rights. Illinois state House Democrats voted to replace the state's abortion law with a measure that would make abortion a primary right in the state. According to the Thomas More Society, the bill known as the "Reproductive Health Act" is worse than the bill passed in New York earlier this year and would make Illinois "an abortion destination" for the entire country.
