Organizations around the world are celebrating “International Safe Abortion Day.” But in their promotion of the event, they’re failing to address its main flaw: Abortion is never safe, because it always ends at least one life. International organizations including Amnesty International and national groups like NARAL and Planned Parenthood recognized “International Safe Abortion Day” on September 28. Backed by some in the media, they flocked to Twitter to promote abortion. Read more......

A federal judge has temporarily blocked Georgia's heartbeat bill, pro-life legislation that would prohibit abortion after a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which usually takes place at about six weeks' gestation. Republican governor Brian Kemp signed the bill into law in May, and it was set to take effect on January 1, 2020. U.S. District Judge Steve Jones, a President Obama appointee, rejected Georgia's argument that abortion jurisprudence has not precisely defined how the state may act in the interest of unborn life. "Under no circumstances whatsoever may a State prohibit or ban abortions at any point prior to viability, no matter what interests the State asserts to support it,"...

The Kansas legislature is attempting to force a statewide referendum on abortion after the state's Supreme Court declared it a constitutional right, striking down pro-life legislation earlier this year. In April, the Kansas Supreme Court ruled that the state constiution included a fundamental right to have an abortion, and blocked a law that who have banned dilation and evacuation abortions. In response to that decision, on Oct. 1, a legislative committee began two days of hearings to consider a state-wide referendum to amend the constitution, making it explicit that abortion is not a right and the court cannot interpret the constitution to say it is. A federal judge handed pro-choice groups a major loss by upholding multiple restrictions on abortion clinics, including a requirement that pregnant women receive an ultrasound 24 hours before obtaining an abortion and a stipulation that only physicians perform the procedure. Pro-life groups expressed satisfaction. Hudson's decision said the state has a legitimate interest in promoting childbirth over abortion. Read more... ...

The high court's new term starts with cases that could hit religious believers hard. A trio of them concerns the controversial subject of LGBTQ rights. And one of those three involves a funeral home and a fired transgender worker. It could have broader implications for existing civil rights law and invasion of privacy. A man named Anthony Stephens working at a Christian funeral home in Michigan announced to his bosses that he wanted to become Aimee Stephens and start wearing dresses instead of business suits to work. He was terminated and he sued. Read more......

California Gov. Gavin Newsom made his state the first to require public universities to offer abortion medication at campus health centers, beginning in 2023. Newsom contrasted the progressive goals of his new law with restrictions recently enacted in other states. "As other states and the federal government go backward, restricting reproductive freedom, in California we are moving forward, expanding access and reaffirming a woman's right [to] choose," Newsom said. San Francisco expanded its city-funded travel and contracting bans to 22 states with pro-life laws. The 22 states include Texas, Massachusetts, and Florida. The move marks the expansion of an ordinance enacted in August that prohibited city-funded travel "to states that have enacted laws that prohibit abortion prior to the viability of the fetus" and contracting with companies headquartered in those states. The ban initially covered eight states but that list has now expanded to cover nearly half the country. Read more......

A Tennessee law that requires women to wait 48 hours before receiving an abortion decreased the abortion rate in the state while increasing the cost of the procedure, according to a new study. The law, passed in 2015, requires women to receive pre-abortion counseling 48 hours prior to the abortion. It is being challenged in federal court. The new study by researchers at Texas A&M University showed the law led to a decrease in the state's abortion rate, from 8.9 in 2010-14 to 7.2 in 2015-16 (per 1,000 women aged 15-44). Read more......

It's time to seriously reconsider our pro-life strategies and honestly examine the efficacy of the national pro-life movement. The personhood movement is calling the grassroots forward to restore the fundamental principles at the foundation of the pro-life movement, to take action at the local and state levels to protect all human beings equally, without exception, and to engage churches and communities in the real, sacrificial work of changing hearts and minds, one person at a time. As many pregnant students say they face pressure to have abortions to advance their education and careers, one pro-life group has released a "bill of rights" to help pregnant and parenting students protect their futures. "The goal of schools should be to assist students, no matter their stage of life," the Students for Life's Pregnant on Campus initiative said on its website. "If a student is being bullied by coaches, intimidated by professors, and pressured by friends, this is not the supportive, empowering environment that pregnant and parenting students on American campuses deserve." The Special Committee on Federal and State Affairs has made a recommendation to the legislature that could change the Constitution of Kansas to potentially outlaw abortion. In April, the Kansas Supreme Court upheld the state Constitution which gives a woman the right to decide whether to continue with a pregnancy or have an abortion. Pro-life groups are asking for a constitutional amendment to be made that would change this. All but two lawmakers on the Special Committee for Federal and State Affairs agreed to move the recommendation for a possible amendment forward. Read more......
