Indian River County pro-life advocates want tighter restrictions on abortion centers. Under their proposal, a doctor who performs a late-term abortion could be charged with a second-degree misdemeanor. The group is asking the County Commission to approve a countywide law prohibiting abortions conducted at an abortion center based on gender or genetic abnormalities or after 20 weeks of pregnancy. One year after the Mississippi Justice Institute filed a lawsuit against the city of Jackson, the city council has repealed their buffer zone ordinance that restricted free speech around abortion clinics. Last October, MJI and members of Sidewalk Advocates for Life – Jackson, Mississippi launched a constitutional challenge to Jackson’s prohibition on pro-life counseling and other free speech outside the state’s only abortion facility. If successful, the amendment would enshrine the right to abortion in state law as well as expand access to abortions after 24 weeks in cases of fatal fetal anomalies — not just when necessary to save a woman's life. It would also no longer require women under age 18 to gain permission from a parent or judge to get an abortion. The ROE Act Coalition, which includes the ACLU of Massachusetts, Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts and NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, called the move a "critical first step in removing medically unnecessary barriers to abortion." Bearing in mind Scripture's admonition that each of us "love your neighbor as yourself" (Matt. 22:39) we realize that Christians are called to lead the way in righting the injustice of abortion. After all, which neighbor is more defenseless than an unborn child? The best way to word all this is directly from the Bible: "I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse; now choose life so that you and your children may live.." A new bill would make nearly all forms of abortion a crime in Arkansas, punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $100,000 fine. Senate Bill 6, sponsored by Sen. Jason Rapert, R-Conway, and Rep. Mary Bentley, R-Perryville, allows abortion to be performed legally only when the mother’s life is threatened or to remove an ectopic pregnancy. Jerry Cox is the president of the Family Council, a faith-based advocacy organization in Little Rock. He says the goal of the bill is not out-of-step with the sentiments of most Arkansans. A Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Tennessee can protect more vulnerable children by enforcing its ban on abortions specifically because the unborn baby has Down syndrome or based on its race or sex. After Tennessee approved the bill, abortion activists immediately took it to court. The law was immediately blocked by a lower federal court just hours after Governor Lee signed it into law; however, now the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals issued a ruling stating that the ban on abortions because a baby has Down syndrome or is of a certain race or sex can be enforced while the rest of the lawsuit against the remaining portions of the law continues. A federal appeals court ruled that Texas and Louisiana can cut off funding to Planned Parenthood clinics, reversing earlier decisions stemming from legal battles over abortion. The decision by the full 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans reverses an earlier ruling by a three-judge appellate panel that blocked Texas from enforcing its ban on Medicaid funding of Planned Parenthood. Once he is inaugurated, President-elect Joe Biden is expected to adhere to a pro-choice agenda and reverse many of the anti-abortion policies implemented by the Trump administration -- a prospect that pro-choice groups are looking forward to seeing and pro-life groups are dreading. On his campaign website, Biden listed a number of goals and promises in this area.
