Texas became the first state to virtually outlaw abortions since the landmark Roe v. Wade decision in 1973. Texas’ new law prohibits abortions as soon as a fetal “heartbeat” is detected, which can occur as early as six weeks into pregnancy, before many women know they are pregnant. Abortions rights advocates and providers had asked state courts to block the law before it took effect but came up empty-handed. Governor Kristi Noem signed Executive Order 2021-12, which directs the South Dakota Department of Health to establish rules preventing telemedicine abortions in South Dakota. The executive order also restricts chemical abortions in the state. Gov. Kathy Hochul, responding to strict new abortion laws in Texas, said that she'll make New York a safe legal haven for women's reproductive health. "We have to stop extremists from taking women's rights away," Hochul said at an appearance with U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and other female state and local leaders at the Women's Rights Pioneers Monument in New York City's Central Park. The Texas law prohibits abortions after six weeks of pregnancy and creates a kind of bounty system where people can be paid up to $10,000 if they report potential violators. A federal judge denied a Department of Justice request to block enforcement of the controversial Texas abortion law. More than 40 Republicans are criticizing Google's decision to ban anti-abortion ads for abortion reversal pills, accusing the tech giant of being unfairly influenced by left-leaning pro-abortion groups and news agencies. House Democrats voted to establish a federal right to abortion, moving swiftly to advance the measure after the supreme court declined to stop a Texas law effectively outlawing the procedure and as they await a separate ruling next year that could further erode access. Thousands packed the Harrisburg streets at the state's first-ever pro-life march. Many traveled hundreds of miles with one goal in mind: to urge lawmakers to change their stance on abortion. "I want to show my support for the state, [I] don't know too much about state politics but wanted to be with the people who kind of believe like me," said pro-life supporter Kim Bodie.
