The idea is to add a steep financial penalty to any possible criminal penalties, as the former can actually be considerably more intimidating than the latter. The #WeCount project of the Society of Family Planning released new data on the number of abortions that have been performed in the United States since the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision. The #WeCount project compares abortion declines in states that have enacted pro-life laws with abortion increases in other states. Overall, they have found, 32,260 fewer abortions were performed in the United States in the first six full months after the Dobbs decision. That is an average of 5,377 fewer abortions every month. Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., caused a flurry of both joyous and distraught reactions by signing a bill to ban abortions in his state after six weeks of pregnancy. DeSantis announced that he signed SB 300, dubbed the "Heartbeat Protection Act." Passed to his desk by the Republican-majority state legislature, the bill bans abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, though allows some exceptions for victims of rape and incest. The new bill stipulates that abortions for these women can be sought up to 15 weeks into pregnancy, if a woman has documentation related to the incidents, such as a police report or restraining order. The Pennsylvania Department of Health published its findings from an unannounced visit to UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital resulting from a formal complaint I submitted stating that the facility was breaking state licensure regulations by not allowing pro-life advocates to be present during board of directors meetings. Local and state pro-lifers have held rallies and prayer walks on the sidewalk outside Magee during scheduled meeting times since they were barred from direct participation. Magee was cited for violating 28 Pa. Code 103.3, 10, iii, which requires hospital governance to hold at least one meeting per year in which members of the community can be in attendance. A pro-life pregnancy center in Ohio was attacked by the radical pro-choice group "Jane’s Revenge," which tagged the building with messages to "fund abortion" and "abort God." HerChoice, a pro-life pregnancy center in Bowling Green, Ohio, was attacked by "Jane’s Revenge" and hit with anti-Christian and pro-choice graffiti. A federal judge granted a pro-life health care clinic a temporary exemption from Colorado’s first-in-the-nation ban on the abortion pill reversal regimen after the clinic filed a lawsuit soon after the measure took effect. U.S. District Court Judge Daniel Domenico said in his injunction Sunday that the new law, which was part of a three-bill package expanding abortion in the state that was signed by Gov. Jared Polis on Friday, “burdens their own First Amendment rights.” The plaintiff, Bella Health and Wellness, a pro-life, Catholic-founded nonprofit health care clinic that provides abortion pill reversal with a progesterone treatment, challenged the law. After successfully defending the right of states to regulate abortion at the Supreme Court, Mississippi enacted eight new laws Wednesday that Republican Gov. Tate Reeves says will make adoption easier, strengthen the foster care system and increase support for pro-life pregnancy centers as alternatives to abortion clinics. "Mississippi has moved to the next phase in our pursuit to build a culture of life," Reeves said during a signing ceremony. "That phase is the new pro-life agenda. ... A large pro-life group and predominant GOP donor has condemned former President Donald Trump for his newly shared views on abortion in the wake of the summer's Dobbs reversal. North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum signed an abortion ban at six weeks of pregnancy — even in cases of rape or incest — into law. "This bill clarifies and refines existing state law ... and reaffirms North Dakota as a pro-life state," Burgum, a Republican, said in a statement. The law, one of the strictest in the country, takes effect immediately. A federal judge in Colorado heard arguments about a new state law that would ban clinics from offering treatment to save babies from the chemical abortion pill mifepristone. The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty filed a lawsuit on April 14 on behalf of Bella Health and Wellness, a nonprofit Roman Catholic healthcare clinic, to block the law the same day it was signed by Gov. Jared Polis. U.S. District Court Judge Daniel Domenico on Apr. 15 exempted the clinic from the ban for 14 days. Colorado authorities said they would not enforce the ban until the state's medical, pharmacy, and nursing boards rule on whether the abortion reversal procedure is safe.
