Bella Health and Wellness started as an OB-GYN practice founded by a mother and daughter, both practicing Catholics and nurse practitioners, who were inspired to open a pro-life, faith-based medical clinic. The clinic has expanded into family medicine and now serves thousands of patients. Why would such a clinic end up in federal court? Because the organization, now represented by the lawyers at Becket, offers abortion pill reversal, which runs afoul of a new law in Colorado. Read more......

A 29-year-old Wisconsin man, Hridindu Sankar Roychowdhury, has pleaded guilty to the May 2022 firebombing of a Madison office building. Roychowdhury, also of Madison, admitted to attempting to cause damage by means of fire or an explosive. Roychowdhury's guilty plea relates to the firebombing of the Wisconsin Family Action office in Madison. The attack, which occurred on May 8, 2022, was one of many directed at pro-life organizations and churches following the publication of a leaked draft U.S. Supreme Court decision indicating that justices were poised to overturn the Roe v. Wade. Read more......

A Teton County judge is allowing four pro-life doctors to argue in court that abortion is not health care. Judge Melissa Owens filed an order last week allowing Wyoming Drs. Timothy Hallinan and David M. Lind (both retired), and Drs. Michale Nelson and Samantha Michelena to file an amicus brief in a lawsuit seeking to overturn the Wyoming’s two abortion bans. The pro-life amicus brief consists of four Wyoming doctors arguing that abortion is not health care, and that the plaintiffs’ ideas about obstetrics would impose a one-patient paradigm, rather than an obstetrician’s concern for two patients in a pregnancy, and radically change health care in Wyoming. A Wisconsin circuit court judge has affirmed her earlier ruling that an 1840s law protecting unborn children does not outlaw abortion. Dane County Circuit Court Judge Diane Schlipper wrote in her Dec. 5 ruling that the 1849 law "does not apply to consensual abortions but to feticide." The statute in question says that "any person, other than the mother, who intentionally destroys the life of an unborn child is guilty of a Class H felony." After the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the law was reactivated but has since been enmeshed in legal challenges. "The court declares Wis. Stat. § 940.04 does not prohibit abortions," Schlipper wrote. Read more......

Texas law after the fall of Roe vs. Wade makes only a narrow, rare exception for abortion — to save a woman’s life. That robust pro-life law, and heartbreaking reality have now intersected in the case of Kate Cox, a Dallas area resident, and Attorney General Ken Paxton’s interpretation of the law. A Travis County judge granted Cox’s petition to have an abortion, due to her unusual circumstances. Paxton said that even the judge’s order to allow the abortion to proceed “will not insulate hospitals, doctors, or anyone else, from civil and criminal liability for violating Texas’ abortion laws.” This is a lose-lose situation for everyone, most of all for Cox. Paxton’s punitive statement seems...

The Texas Supreme Court late Friday night temporarily halted a lower-court order allowing a woman who is 20 weeks pregnant to get an abortion — reversing a lower-court ruling that marks the first case of a pregnant woman seeking a court order for the procedure since Roe v. Wade was overturned last year. On Thursday, Travis County District Judge Maya Guerra Gamble, an elected Democrat, granted a temporary restraining order that would allow Cox to have an abortion under the narrow exceptions to the state's ban. But Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) asked the Supreme Court of Texas to intervene to block Cox from obtaining an abortion. Read more......

Illinois has agreed to halt its enforcement of a law that restricts the speech and advertising of pro-life crisis pregnancy centers following a lawsuit that challenged its constitutionality on First Amendment and other grounds. Attorney General Kwame Raoul agreed to a court order that imposes a permanent injunction against the legislation on Dec. 11. This prohibits the state from enforcing the law, which had already been temporarily paused by a judge pending the outcome of the litigation. Read more......
