SC Supreme Court Upholds Fetal Heartbeat Law

South Carolina tried to pass a fetal heartbeat law in 2021, but it was blocked by the state's high court that same year. The bill was revived in 2023 by Gov. Henry McMaster after the fall of Roe V. Wade. The 2023 Fetal Heartbeat and Protection from Abortion Act banned abortion after steady cardiac activity was detected in an ultrasound, which the state says happens within six weeks of conception. The legislation includes exceptions to the ban in cases of medical emergencies, rape, incest or fatal fetal anomalies. Read more...
