Dems Whine as Texas Abortion Ban Goes Into Effect

Texas became the first state to virtually outlaw abortions since the landmark Roe v. Wade decision in 1973. Texas’ new law prohibits abortions as soon as a fetal “heartbeat” is detected, which can occur as early as six weeks into pregnancy, before many women know they are pregnant. Abortions rights advocates and providers had asked state courts to block the law before it took effect but came up empty-handed. They appealed directly to the U.S. Supreme Court, but the high court declined to intervene, allowing Texas’ restrictive law to take effect as written.
