South Dakota Downs Syndrome Bill Advances

A bill introduced by the Governor's Office to ban abortions based on the diagnosis of Down syndrome is moving forward after advocates from around the country testified in support of the bill. House Bill 1110 would criminalize those who conduct abortions they know are requested because the unborn child has or may have Down syndrome based on a screening. The bill was unanimously supported in its first committee hearing. About 14 people testified in support of the bill, including a a scientist with the pro-life advocacy group Susan B. Anthony List, a Down syndrome advocate, South Dakota families who have children with Down syndrome, South Dakota Right to Life and the South Dakota Catholic Conference. Read more...
